Auto Ads for Adsense in Word Press

What are Auto Ads for Adsense?

After so many years, I still find Google’s Ad Sense confusing.  But it still manages to earn me a bit of money.  Recently (well maybe not so recently), I received an email from Google re. Auto Ads and suggesting I set them up.  Of course, I procrastinated.

But today is the day I decided to deal with this new feature: Google Adsense’s Auto ads.  Sounds like a good thing (that Google will automatically place ads for me) but can I set it up?

FYI:  I am using Genesis framework for my (self-hosted) WordPress sites so the info here is related to that specifically.

How to Set Up Auto Ads for Google Adsense

Please note: from I am assuming your site is a self-hosted WordPress site and you are using the Genesis framework as the foundation of your theme.  Otherwise I am not able to say whether the following applies.

1) Setting up in Google Adsense

S/N: I am assuming you already have Adsense.  Otherwise you might want to read What is AdSense & Basic Info.

Log into your Google Adsense >> Ads >> Auto Ads

You may or may not see this next page: AdSense Help: How to set up Auto Ads. It has notes and instructions on how to set up Auto ads.

Auto ads - set up global ad typesOr you could be taken directly to the next screen. Here you set up the ad types that you want applied globally to your chosen sites.  By default, all are selected.

I disabled both overlay ads:

  • Anchor ads (“Mobile ads that stick to the edge of the user’s screen and are easily dismissible”.  – Personally I find this annoying as a user.)
  • Vignette ads (“Full-screen mobile ads that appear in between page loads on your sites, also easily dismissable.” I also find this annoying as a user.)

Once you have selected the ad types you want, click Save button at the end of the page.

The next page will give you a code snippet that you are to use on your site. (To be placed within the <head> </head> of a page.)

There is also a link for how to insert ad code into your WordPress site.

Click Done when you have done copying the code etc.

2) Setting Up in your WordPress (Genesis Theme)

Log into your WordPress admin >> Genesis >> (scroll down to) >> Google AdSense >> [enter your AdSense publisher ID] >> Save Changes

setting up AdSense Auto AdsIMPORTANT:

If you are lucky enough to be using Genesis Themes, once you have:

  • enabled the Auto Ads in your Google Adsense and
  • entered your Adsense Publisher ID as per above

that is all you have to do!!!  Genesis will automatically place the auto ads code in the <head> of your site.

For those using Genesis themes, you can read: Genesis: Add Your Google AdSense Publisher ID for more info.

GENESIS BONUS: HINT SHORTCODE

You can use the following shortcode in a post/page to “suggest” to Google that you think this location would be a good one for an ad.

Additional Notes from Google AdSense:

  • Google Adsense says that it will take between 10-20 minutes for the auto ads to appear on your site.
  • AdSense: “The ad code is the same for every page on every site where you want to show Auto ads. “
  • AdSense: “After you’ve pasted the ad code, you can still make changes to your Auto ads settings at any time without having to change the ad code.”

Note for Self:

These are the global auto ads I have:
