Tutorial for Newbies #3: Create GetResponse Campaign

Now that we have those few salient facts about campaigns under our belt, we can start our tutorial on how to create our first GetResponse campaign.

Create GetResponse Campaign – Tutorial for Newbies Part 3

As I said earlier, GR (GetResponse) automatically creates a campaign for you, using the first part of your (sign-up) email address as the campaign name. That might not always be the most useful campaign name.

So using my site as an example, let’s walk-through how to create our own campaign.

The following is what I want to achieve in this example:

  • My site is called NetWebbing.
  • I just want to set up a campaign for all subscribers to my site.
  • I want to provide them with the convenience of email updates whenever I have a new post.

The first screen you see when you log in might look like this.

Just ignore the 3 lovely big buttons.

Go to top right: “Your current campaign:” and click drop-down arrow.
From drop-down list >> Create Campaign

GetResponse - name campagin

GetResponse – name campagin

Campaign Name

Remember it must be:

  • unique
  • alphanumeric (lowercase) and only underscore allowed
SideNote: I have named this campaign as “netwebbing_updates1”

Then click “Create New Campaign”

Edit Campaign Settings

On the next screen, you can see that there are a number of things you can do. For simplicity, we will “Edit Campaign Settings” to make sure that all the settings we want are in place.

Tip:

In future, to get to your Edit Campaign Settings again, just look to the Top Right >> ascertain you have the correct campaign >> click gears icon.

GetResponse Campaign – Edit Settings (General)

When you get into the Edit Campaign Setting page, you will notice that there are 3 main sections:

  • General
  • Profile
  • Permission

I will go through each of them, step by step.

Check the campaign name. It should be what you have just named it.

Under “Notifications”, the “Send notifications to” might probably need to be changed. By default, it will display the email address you used to sign up for your GetResponse (GR) account.  It is recommended that this email address corresponds to the domain of your site.

For example, my site is netwebbing.com.  So for this campaign, this campaign’s email address should be something like: someone@netwebbing.com

Note:
This email address will be the from-email address for each of the newsletters you send out from this campaign to your subscribers.  So this is the email address they will see.  Hence it is better and more professional if it corresponds to the site where they signed up as your subscriber.

You can click the “Add Email address” link to add an appropriate email address for this campaign.

Note: when you add a new email address, GetResponse will send you a confirmation email. You need to click the link within to confirm. However, you might to wait a while before the email comes through to your email system.

At the bottom of the screen, you will see your postal address. A real address is required to comply with anti-spam laws.

Edit Campaign Settings – Profile

Campaign Profile is the next section of the settings to be attended to.

Campaign title & Campaign Description –  important because they will appear in your campaign’s:

  1. Confirmation Page
  2. Unsubscribe Page
  3. Unsubscribe Success Page
  4. Newsletter Directory

Note the handy preview links at the bottom.  You can click (opens in new window) to view what those various pages will look like. They will change as you modify your campaign profile settings.  Very handy!

Category – choose an appropriate category for your campaign.  It will make your management easier in the future.

Logo – upload (or add from URL) a logo for your campaign.  It will appear in your newsletters as well as appear on the four pages noted above.

Tip:

  • Formats allowed: .gif, .jpg, .png, .bmp
  • GR allows a free 1GB of storage for your media.
  • Can create “Gallery” (to better organise your campaigns)

RSS feed – nothing for you to change here.  Just leave as is.

To illustrate, this is what mine looks like after updating the campaign profile:

And clicking on the handy preview of the Confirmation page, this is what it looks like:

Sidenote: GR’s online preview screens are very handy.  However, their inclusion of 3rd party ads is not.  These ads cannot be turned off in their free 1 month trial offer.  In this aspect, AWeber is better as they do not impose unwanted 3rd party ads on you at any time.

Edit Campaign Settings – Permission

Import subscriptions – I would recommend you uncheck this.  If you are importing your subscriber list (e.g. you are moving from another autoresponder service to GetResponse), then you might not necessarily want your existing subscribers to get yet another email asking them to confirm their subscription again.

In every other case (email subscription and web subscription), you should offer an email confirmation opt-in (aka double opt-in).  This means that a person will be emailed a confirmation whereby they click a link before they subscription is activated.

Caution: use integrity when adding or importing contact names.  You should not be adding anyone’s names who has not specifically already given permission or have absolutely confirmed that they wanted to be on your (specific) campaign(s).

Confirmation message | Message type: select Plain text.

Reason for plain text: most spam being sent today is in HTML format.  So the email asking a person to confirm their subscription to your campaign should be as safe as possible for the recipient.

From field: you may choose to change to an appropriate email address. From field indicates who the confirmation email is sent from.

Message subject: use the drop-down arrow to see a list of possible subjects.  Click the “Custom Subject” link to write your own if you prefer.

Customize confirmation message (button) – click to customize the confirmation message itself.  Recommended.  (You can preview your confirmation message/email as you made changes.) See the following how-to video for useful tips and guide.

Confirmation page: for now (being our first campaign), would be faster and easier to have ti “Hosted by GetResponse”.  If/When you have set up your own custom Thank You (for confirming subscription) page, you can come back to your campaign setting to change this to “Custom URL”.

Congratulations!  You have created your basic GetResponse campaign setup.  I know this Part 3 of the Create GetResponse Campaign tutorial seemed long but if you have come this far, you would have realized that it is not a very long process at all.  Just the pictures and explanation seemed to make it seem long.  Right? 😉

You can watch this training video to help cement and supplement the steps we have covered on how to create campaign with GetResponse.

Next (part 4): Adding Contacts (existing Subscribers)

Now that you have created your first GetResponse Campaign, we can move on to Adding Contacts. (If you do not yet have any contact to add or none to import at this stage, then you can jump straight to setting up a Part 5: RSS-to-Email newsletter.)
